There are more than 150 waterfalls across this breathtaking area of the Upper Peninsula. In the Autumn, the waterfalls are framed by maple crimson and aspen gold. In the winter, they create strange ice formations. All are spectacles of white splendor that are sure to make any vacation memorable.

THE NATIONAL BLACK RIVER SCENIC BYWAY
The National Black River Scenic Byway includes, Great Conglomerate Falls, Potawatomi, Gorge, Sandstone, and Rainbow Falls. As you visit our waterfalls, stop and take notice of the signs explaining the conglomerate rock formations.
Directions: From Hwy. US 2 in Bessemer take Powderhorn Rd North. When you come to the T in the road at the stop sign, make a left hand turn on Black River Rd. You will find all the waterfalls on this Road. This road is approximately 14 miles long, ending in the only Harbor & Marina operated by the USDA Forest Service in the lower 48 states.
Great Conglomerate Falls
This is a very large waterfall which is divided by a wide conglomerate rock formation. This waterfall is well marked. Walking trail 3/4 mile.

Potawatomi Falls
Potawatomi, which is barrier-free (from Gorge Parking Lot), is one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the Black River. This waterfall is well marked. A restroom is available at this site. Walking trail is approximately 1/8 mile. Shares common road in with Gorge Falls and 2 separate parking lots.

Gorge Falls
This conglomerate canyon has a 34 foot drop. Potawatomi and Gorge Falls are accessible by the same parking area. Walking trail is approximately 1/8 mile.

Sandstone Falls
This waterfall meanders over rocks giving it a unique appearance. It is located on a beautiful spot on the Black River, with a well marked, short 1/4 mile walking trail.

Rainbow Falls
Walking Trail: 1/2 mile from parking lot down a long staircase to a viewing platform. Rainbow Falls can also be ac-cessed from the east side of the river by crossing suspension bridge at the Harbor and follow signs. ¾ mile hike on the North Country Trail.Take is easy, there are many stairs.

Bond Falls
Take Hwy 45 to the town of Paulding. Go 2.5 miles east on Bond Falls Rd. A paved path leads to the lower falls and is handicap accessible. The upper falls can be accessed by a staircase next to the falls or by parking on the road past the main parking area.

Located on the Black River, take US2 between Bessemer and Wakefield to Blackjack road. Turn north and go pas second gas line clearing and park, approx 1.5 miles. Walk the line west to river river. Upper and lower river locations.

On M-28, go approximately 7 miles east of Bruce Crossing to Joseph E. Orevec Roadside Park, south side of road. An accessible trail from the Michigan roadside park leads under the road and to a viewing area at the top of the falls.

Cascade Falls (Cascade Creek)
From Bergland, head east on M28 and turn north on Forest Road 400. Follow the signs to the parking area at the trailhead. There are two trails that lead to the falls. The main trail is the easiest, with only moderate changes in elevation. The second trail, Bluff Trail, leaves and rejoins the main trail. It is quite challenging, however the view is definitely worth the extra effort.

Kakabika Falls (Cisco Branch Ontonagon River)
From US-2 go 14 miles west of Watersmeet, take County Road 527 north about .5 miles. The falls are a series of
“S” turns that descend as the river drops in elevation.

Mex-i-min-e Falls (Middle Branch Ontonagon River)
(From Watersmeet, take Old US 2 east to Forest Road 4500. Follow Forest Road 4500 to the Burned Dam Campground. Follow the sound of water to the short, well-used trail from the campground to the falls.

Peanut Butter Falls
O Kun de Kun Falls
(Baltimore River)7.5 miles north of Bruce Crossing on Hwy 45, park at parking lot for North Country Hiking Trail. Hike 1.1 miles to Peanut Butter Falls. Continue another .02 to O Kun de Kun Falls.

Yondota Falls (Presque Isle River)
Take US 2 to County 523 near Marenisco and turn north for 3 miles. Falls are on the left. Follow the short trail to see a series of waterfalls.

Ajibikoka Falls (Brush Lake)
Advanced orienteering skills are required to locate this 40 foot waterfall. From Watersmeet, take County Road 206 west to Forest Road 5120. Park your car off the road. Follow Forest Road 5120 along the west side of Brush Lake for about a 1/2-mile. Take a compass reading and hike northeast.

Park at the Presque Isle Scenic Area (Presque Isle Road north from South Boundary Road) and take the path to falls. The falls are also accessible along the East & West River Trail 2.3 mile loop which begins at the Presque Isle River bridge on South Boundary Road.

Lepisto Falls
Take M-28 from Wakefield to County 519, turn left (North) on County 519 for about 12 miles to parking area for the North Country Trail. Take trail East across road and follow trail for about 0.6 miles to spur to Lepisto Falls, about 0.2 mile to falls.

Big Carp River
Shining Cloud Falls
Located on the Big Carp River Trail. From Lake of the Clouds, the hiking distance is 8.2 miles. This section of trail features scenic views and old growth forest as it follows the escarpment ridge and then descends into the valley. A shorter, 5.3 mile route from South Boundary Road takes Pinkerton Trail to Lake Superior Trail to the Big Carp River Trail. This route will pass Bathtub Falls and Big Carp Falls on the way to Shining Cloud Falls.

LITTLE CARP RIVER
Overlooked Falls
Park at the end of Little Carp River Road off South Boundary Road. The waterfall is a few hundred feet down the trail at the first bridge.

After crossing the river at the bridge by Overlooked Falls, continue following the Little Carp River Trail to the left.

Trappers Falls
Take the Little Carp River Trail about 3 miles from the trailhead. This route will also pass Overlooked Falls and Greenstone Falls.

Trap Falls (Carp River Inlet)
Park at the Government Peak trailhead on Hwy 107. The 2.5 mile hike to the falls crosses and then follows the Upper Carp River.

LITTLE IRON RIVER
Nonesuch Falls
Park at the North Country Trail parking lot off South Boundary Road at the southeast corner of the Park. Hike 1.25 miles to the falls. The trail will pass the ruins of the Nonesuch Mine site, an abandoned copper mine and small ghost town.

UNION RIVER
Little Union Gorge Falls
Located on the Interpretive Union Mine Trail 1-mile loop. Take South Boundary Road south from the Visitor Center and park at the trailhead on the west side of South Boundary Road. The full hiking loop features the Little Union gorge and the history of the 1846 Union Mine.

Interstate Falls
Take US2 west into Wisconsin, .6 miles after the Hwy 51 overpass. Turn right on gravel road. Pass the gravel pit on the right and go .4 miles where road turns right and a trail heads off to the left to Insterstate Falls .35 miles. Coming back from the falls stop about halfway back and listen for more falls. head toward the sound and see the Unamed Falls about 3.5 miles.

Peterson Falls
Back at the car, continue down the road 50 yards. Where the gravel road crosses, turn left and park. Walk to end of the road and go right on trail. 15 miles.

Superior Falls
Located on the Montreal River. Take US2 west in Wisconsin to Hwy 122. Turn north and follow into Michigan. When you cross the river between WI and MI, take the first road to the left and park in the power company parking area. Follow the signs to view falls.

Powderhorn Falls (Powder Mill Creek)
Take US 2 west of Bessemer for 1 mile and turn north on Powderhorn Road. Go approximately 1.5 miles to the unmarked trail on the right, just past Alpen Road. The trail will lead to the top of a small but scenic waterfall.

Root Beer Falls (Planter Creek)
Take M-28 east of Wakefield. Go left on Wertanen Rd. (after County 519). There is a small pull off less than 1/4 mile. Falls can be seen on left.

Little Trap Falls (Anderson Creek)
From Bergland, take M-64 north for about 10 miles. Turn right on Old M-64 and stay on road for 2.2 miles. Park on the shoulder and hike east through woods to reach Anderson Creek. Follow the creek upstream. There is no maintained trail.

Judson Falls (Slate River)
Advanced orienteering skills are required to locate this waterfall. From US 2, go north on Stagecoach Road for 2.8 miles. Park and hike the 2-track. Stay on the main road for 1.7 miles. At the fork in the road, continue right for a few hundred yards. Head west into the woods to the river.

Maple Creek Falls (Maple Creek)
In Bessemer, turn north on county 513. Just past the Potowatomi & Gorge Falls sign, turn left on Maple Creek Road. Park at the gate and continue hiking to the Maple Creek bridge. Follow the trail north on the east side of the bridge to the creek.

Manakiki Falls (Maple Creek)
Located 150 feet upstream from Maple Creek Falls. Cross the bridge and pick up the trail south on west side of creek.

Victoria Dam Falls (West Branch Ontonagon River)
Seasonal. Only flows when spillway is open in high water. Take Victoria Dam Road (Elm Street) west of Rockland. Bear left at junction by Old Victoria Restoration to falls.

Gleason Falls (Gleason Creek)
From Norwich Road, take Victoria Road 3 miles to Gleason Creek. There is no maintained trail. The falls are located in a deep canyon about .7 miles from Victoria Road.

Rock Bluff Falls (Bluff Creek)
From Watersmeet, take US 45 to Old US 45 one mile. Stop at Bluff Creek and walk creek on south and west side. Three drops.

Wildcat Falls (Scott and Howe Creek)
From Watersmeet, drive north on US Highway 45 to County Road 206 (Sucker Lake Road). Go west to County Line Lake Road and turn north. Continue .6 miles past McGinty Lane and park near the trail sign at the top of the hill. 3/4 mile hike through old growth cedar & hemlock.

Powdermill Falls
Large waterfall that has a good amount of water falling into a large pool. This walk is short and easy.
Directions: From Hwy US 2 between Ironwood & Bessemer, go north on Powderhorn Road approximately two miles. You will see a sign for the Alpine Inn & Village. Just past that sign is a dirt road on you left and a dirt path on your right. Park you vehicle on the shoulder of the road and follow the path to the waterfalls.
Maple Creek
Just past the driveway to Potawatomi & Gorge waterfalls ( on the Black River National Forest Scenic Byway) is Maple Creek road on your left. Take the dirt road in about 4 miles to the bridge and find a parking spot. The falls are below the bridge and upstream. Downstream is Lake Superior about 1/2 mile.
Nelson Canyon Falls
Beautiful waterfall and a beautiful hike that ends with a spectacular climax. Approximately 45 minute walk that is not difficult. Take your time to enjoy and explore this area.
Directions: Three miles West of Lake Gogebic on Hwy 64 take C Camp Rd; cross Nelson Creek (culverts) and continue for almost one mile until you are on your way uphill there is a two track (path). Park and walk the two track in and as it peters out or turns right; walk angling left. When you get to the river walk downstream.
